Lonely Planet Series
If you are unsure of which of the traditional guide books is best, start with the Lonely Planet series. These tend to include a mix of things—both hostels and hotels, famous sights and off-the-wall places. They have nice photos that you haven’t seen before on somebody’s “Clip Art-O-Rama” CD-ROM. The writing is usually good enough so that the books also serve as “arm chair” travel reads.
One thing—unless you’ll really be traveling everywhere in a country, buy either the city guide (ex. Tokyo-only) or the country guide (Japan) but not both, as they tend to overlap.
