Some Kauai Activites

Here are a few activities that we enjoyed while we were there. We've included the companies that we used, but don't take these as endorsements.

Half Day Napali Catamaran Snorkel Cruise,

Go to Kaua’i Sea Tours and explore the Napali Coast on a half day cruise aboard the spacious Lucky Lady Catamaran. We sailed past sea caves, waterfalls, lush valleys and towering sea cliffs while Captain Geof told us Kauai legends and history. Captain Geoff invited our nine-year old to sit next to him and help navigate. We saw sea turtles and then the highlight: several Humpback whales leaping into the air – breathtaking. This was her most exciting Kauai adventure.

Smith’s Tropical Paradise

Hawaii’s only navigable rivers are on Kauai. A leisurely cruise up the Wailua River into the lush tropical jungle is an intriguing adventure for kids and a way to learn how Hawaiian royalty lived. The river and its sacred surrounding royal lands were reserved for kings and high chiefs of Kauai. Boat operators share fascinating stories and entertainers perform Hawaiian songs and dances. When the boat lands, you
walk to a stunning setting to a natural amphitheater with remarkable acoustics– the famous Fern Grotto.

A van takes about ten people through Lihue’s old sugar cane plantation into Kauai’s emerald interior with breathtaking vistas and spectacular scenery.
Then, you’ll get into an inner tube and glide leisurely down miles of tropical waterways – in old plantation irrigation ditches and hand-dug tunnel– that’s why you need to wear a headlamp. At the end of our tubing adventure, we had a picnic lunch in next to a natural swimming hole. Bring/wear: water friendly shoes, swimsuit under T-shirt, towel, change of clothing, sunscreen and insect repellent. For children ages 5 and older.

Experience the food, music and dance of Hawaii with a theatrical luau, a new musical form which pays homage to Kauai’s history and mythology. The luau starts with the imu ceremony (unearthing of a cooked pig from an underground oven) and an all-you can eat
buffet of Hawaiian specialties like lomi lomi salmon; purple sweet potatoes mashed with coconut and nutmeg; poi (a paste made from pounded taro root); fish wrapped in taro leaves; and kulolo, a pudding made of taro root and coconut milk.

After dinner as the sky darkens, there’s a spectacular extravaganza, with plenty of heavy drumming and rapid hula hip movements. Professional dancers and musicians in elaborate costumes, tell ancient stories of Polynesian migration to Hawaii and Kauai mythology. Our nine-year old was mesmerized by the dramatic traditional fire knife dancing and story of Pele, the Goddess of Fire; her lover, and the Dragon Women.
