Ecuador Ah, Quito. Great city- valley (city) altitude: over 9,000 feet above sea level. (watch for altitude sickness in kids-if it does occur, load them up on carbs or start high carbs the day before to avoid it-I know, carbs=sugar…But would you prefer a wound up kid or a nauseous kid bound to hurl at the most inappropriate moment?) There are hundreds of hotels. Here are some that are kid friendly and my opinion on some others:

This was all in all my best experience in any Quito Hotel:

Apartementos Los Quipus -LÃÆ'©rida E14-55 y Lugo Barrio La Floresta Quito, Ecuador E-MAIL: a.quipus@accessinter.net.

P.O. BOX 17-12-075 Quito, Ecuador web site: www.aquipus.com (web site is comprehensive but does not do it the justice it deserves) TELEPHONES 222 40 37 (593-2) 255 77 87 FAX (593-2) 256 11 40

Quipus offers 2 BR apartments (yes your own bedroom w/no tv) starting at $40 USD per night!! Their web site has all the prices. This is impeccably clean, secure and friendly. They have a locked garage for your car, the front entranced is locked and they use video to buzz you in, and a beautiful courtyard for the kids to play in so you don't have to worry about them wandering into the street. They have a play house built into the side of the building for the kiddies to get dirty with Tonka trucks and some real bunnies as well.

Each apartment has a FULL kitchen (and maid service), fireplace and cable tv (1 TV) with Cartoon Network- a lifesaver even if it is in Spanish. They never ONCE asked our kids to quiet down in the courtyard, and I must say they were quite noisy. (we had 3 rooms of family with 6 kids!!) The hotel is located on a quiet street in a residential section of the city so it's not really within walking distance to the touristy stuff but it's a low price to pay for what you get. Taxi's are $2-3 to the trendy ‘Ave Amazonas' section. When trying to get to this hotel, say that it is in the ‘La Floresta' section as not many taxi drivers know it.

Hotel Quito- It is considered a 4 star hotel but I think it has seen it's hay-day and should be better described as a 2 star. It does offer more amenities and services (in room safe, 24 hr room service, valet parking etc.) but is in need of updating. It has splendid views and a rent a car place near by.

Hotel Quito.- Address: Gonzalez Suarez N27-142 and 12 de Octubre. Reservations: Tel. 2544600, Fax: 2567284.

User Feedback

Quito is a beautiful and relatively safe city. It is surrounded by mountains and has lots of green areas for kids to run around in. My kids didn’t suffer any ill effects of the altitude but we did take time to acclimate to the height. I would reccomend saving activities that are very strenuous or that will take you even higher into the Andes, (like the TeleferiQo), for later in your trip.

As for the Hotel Quito, it is a lovely hotel with a very large pool and lots of grounds for the kids to run around in. The rooms are clean, the amendities sufficient, (cable tv, minibar, safe), and the staff is very hospitible. Don’t miss the buffet breakfast!
