Where to Stay--Overview and Recommendations
There are three popular areas to stay in on Bali, all quite different. Choosing the area that best fits your idea of a vacation with the kids is probably as important as the actual hotel you stay at, if not more so.
We went to Bali because we wanted to see it, and chose the hotel we did on our own. We did not receive anything from any of the businesses mentioned here. We went on vacation and are writing this now largely to share what we learned, as well as trying to atone for not sending any postcards to our friends.
We stayed at the Griya Santrian hotel, in Sanur, and would stay there again. The room picture is from the hotel's own website, because our photo was blurry, but accurately shows what the place looked like.

We also had very good service from a Sanur watersports company, Surya Dive Center. They do four-day PADI open water SCUBA certification courses in English and Japanese, dive “orientation” classes for 8-12 year olds, as well as arrange snorkling and parasailing outings. They charged about the same as other places, and were very safety-aware when we were in the water.
