Overview

Everyone who has ever over packed raise your hand.

Oops, sorry about that, if you over packed you probably don't have a hand free. Pack as light as you can. Take only what you need. It is a haiku, a Zen thing, a way of looking at life, a way of enjoying your trip.

This is crucial, so I'll say it again:

Pack as light as you can.
Take only what you need.

OK, all together now: Pack as light as you can. Take only what you need.

For why not “too much”, it is easy to know why it is wrong: weight, hassles with small taxis, easier to lose stuff. “Too light” means no change of undies when your son's first taste of raw squid in Japan ends up on his clothes, or buying something abroad at a crazy price when you have one at home you should have brought along.

But before we go on, consider this: you may not have to pack too much at all. Depending on where you are going, you may be able to mail things to your hotel and skip packing them altogether.

To save the trouble of having to mail the things back home again, mail stuff like disposable diapers that you won't be bringing home anyway. I mean, I hope you won't bring them home, yech.
