Locks are good too. Don't be fooled thinking the little locks on a suitcase will really deter theft. Instead, they will more productively give you a chance to be involved with any child-initiated random suitcase opening. The locks will deter your son's attempt to open the case on a street-side bus stop to “get something” and will give you a chance to avoid opening the case upside down in your room. You have to hold on to the key yourself of course.

Avoid combination lock suitcases, especially if it is too easy to reset the combo. If a clever child resets the combo one day and forgets the number the next day, you'll gain some unwanted first hand knowledge of how to break into a suitcase. The down side is the pressure is now on you to not lose the key.
